Jazz Legend/Percussionist Chico Hamilton Premieres Hamiltonia Album in a Double-Set at One World Theatre
Austin, TX--- Known for representing jazz in its purest form, New York City-based percussionist/band leader Foreststorn “Chico” Hamilton presents two concerts premiering multi-genre works off of his new compilation album Hamiltonia. The 85-year young Chico will be joined by his sextet Euphoria including Cary DeNigris (guitar), Paul Ramsey (bass), Evan Schwam (tenor), Ian Young (alto) and Jeremy Carlstedt (percussion).
Scheduled to drop 9/18/07, Hamiltonia compiles Chico’s original compositions off of his four most recent albums Juniflip, Believe, 6th Avenue Romp, Heritage (2006). Showcasing a “genuine connection to the past but performing with tonal colors of the present,” Chico’s Hamiltonia draws from a different harmonic palette, while setting it over his signature rhythms. From the opening bass notes of "Chicano Heritage" to the percussionistic colorings of "Just Play the Melody", Hamiltonia is an impassioned statement of purpose; an emphatic endorsement of writing and performing this music in the 21st century, the way the great jazz legends did in their time.
Saluted by the Kennedy Center as a “Living Jazz Legend”, and recently appointed to the National Council on the Arts, Chico Hamilton continues to be considered one of the most important living jazz artists and composers. Chico was an essential part of the birth of Cool and West Coast Jazz, and developed what was dubbed "Chamber Jazz," the pairing of jazz and classical instruments. He grew up in California playing with the likes of Dexter Gordon and Charles Mingus. Chico is presently teaching at New School University Jazz Program where he was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree. Upcoming projects include a collaborative album with djs of dance floor reworkings of his music set to be released Fall 2007; touring with Euphoria; writing his autobiography; and composing and performing music for film.
